Is Truck Buying Always This Frustrating? Maybe Not....

As I continue my search for a "new" (used) truck I am reminded of things that worked for me in the past when shopping for cars that I thought might be helpful. These are not necessarily the "golden rules" of auto shopping, these are just a couple of things that worked for me in the past.

First, if you are shopping fairly new used, you are more likely going to get a better vehicle at a dealership. The dealerships have the resources to clean up and fix up what they sell, so in my opinion, you are less likely to buy a vehicle with hidden problems. This doesn't mean a dealership won't sell you a "lemon" but the reality is they are not selling to get rid of something, so for fairly new lower mileage vehicles, a dealership or car lot is a better choice for me.

Always look up or ask for a printed Carfax- these will give you a much truer picture of the vehicle you are looking at. I looked at a truck that looked pristine, but when I got the Carfax it showed that the car was from the east coast and had been wrecked.... I avoid salvage titles especially, but even "moderate damage" can be a huge red flag. Also out of state cars are more likely to be "water damaged"- they could have a huge hidden downside.

Here's one key for me. Do your research and determine 2 things: what you want, and exactly what you are willing to pay that is reasonable. When you get that number, don't get talked out of it with "you can finance the rest" or a super low ball trade in value.

When it comes to trading in- negotiate your price FIRST. Some dealerships will go right to the "do you want to trade in"- don't have that discussion until you have negotiated the price. By doing that you 'll find out the true value they are willing to pay for your car.

This one is a tough one: Don't shop emotionally! Remember the dealerships are just doing business, so they won't get emotional, so don't lose your advantage by getting too excited. Never think "I must have THIS vehicle"- that's a recipe for disaster! if you aren't getting what you want, you MUST be willing to walk away. If your research and buying decisions are reasonable, you will eventually find what you want at the price you want.... so my final suggestion is:

DON'T BE IN A HURRY TO BUY- If you can wait, and if you can walk away, you have a supreme advantage.

I'm hoping one of my blogs very soon will be my celebration on getting the deal I want on a truck. It's been a long time since I've owned a truck...in fact the photo below is the last truck I had...and NO I did not buy it new...I'm not that old!
